Eva Väljaots & Robbie Sherratt @ Floodgate Ale House, Stafford

Event Details

Tiny Pub Concert at Floodgate Ale House, Stafford.

Estonian kannel player Eva Väljaots and Staffordshire fiddler Robbie Sherratt began playing together after meeting at Sibelius Academy, Finland, where they are both folk music masters students. Their music is rooted in dance tunes of the previous centuries and together they regularly perform for dance events in Helsinki and Tallinn. Sharing an affinity for improvisation, they particularly enjoy creating new variations and arrangements at the drop of a hat.

Eva Valjaots is a renowned exponent of the kannel tradition in Estonia and this year 2019 showcase artist at Kaustinen Festival, Finland. The Estonian kannel, an ancient instrument with close relatives in Finland, the Baltics and Russia was used for dance music as well as improvisation and vocal accompaniment. It was frequently paired with the fiddle.

Robbie Sherratt achieved notable success with Staffordshire themed debut album, ‘Provenance’, described by The Living Tradition as “…a tour de force in all aspects. Already in his brief, professional career, he has packed in many high-profile credits, making him a name to watch out for in the future.”
